Research shows that short term experiences that engage students deeply in an intentional cross-cultural experience with structured reflection have the same long-term benefits as semester-long options.

January term and the summer represent ideal times to engage students in site-specific experiential learning projects abroad. When brainstorming in advance of making an actual proposal, remember that these experiences should be immersive, encouraging self-motivated independent learning and the ability to understand issues and concepts in action.

Normally, the study abroad office will require prospective faculty-leaders to partner with a custom design specialist who helps organize and budget the entire project. Exceptions to this policy are made on a case by case basis depending on faculty expertise, experience, and network connections at the proposed abroad site. Faculty members should consult with the Director of Study Abroad at each stage of the process of developing a proposal in order to secure a custom designer.
