Information for Parents

Culture Shock

When your student first arrives abroad, or even when they arrive at a different part of the country, they are likely to experience some culture shock—the disorientation and anxiety that naturally arises in an unfamiliar environment. Parents can play an important role by being supportive through this transition. Once adjusted, it is not uncommon for students to contact home with less frequency. This can be hard on families but is a good sign of your student’s growing confidence and worldliness.

Behavior Contract

All students will have read and signed the STUDENT BEHAVIOR CONTRACT before departure. Any actions or activities executed while abroad that violate the policies stated therein and/or represent Guilford College or the USA poorly may result in the student’s removal from a program and return to the USA at their own expense. Decisions to remove a student are made based on the discretion and recommendation of onsite program leaders to the on-campus leadership team.

Communication

Families and students should be in regular, if not frequent, contact while separated. Each family should pick the means and schedule of contact well in advance. Stick to your plans.

Visiting

Family members sometimes enjoy visiting their students during an off-campus experience. If you plan for such, think carefully about when to do it. Please also be mindful that students are studying, not simply traveling, and that a visit during the program can be disruptive, so plan ahead.
